Nestled in the busy and older neighbourhood of Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong is my all time favourite Tofu Fa (Flower) Place. According to the internet, It's been around since before the 1900s and my mom remember eating here when she was a kid back in the 60's. Not much has a changed in terms of decor but you know you've found a hidden gem when people constantly filter in despite how uncomfortable it is to sit here and eat!
The most perfect bowl of Tofu Fa I have ever laid my eyes on and tasted. One of the things to differentiate between a good or bad bowl of Tofu Fa is how it was scooped into the bowl. If it was one clean scoop on top of another (usually 2 clean scoops for one bowl) then it shows the skill of the one making it. The taste is obviously that it melts in your mouth and you can taste the bean flavour in each bite!
Tofu Fa comes in either hot or cold and on a hot day, I chose the cold one. The nice part here is that they let you add your own sugar for both the hot or cold versions (usually they already add it into the cold ones at the other places I've eaten at).
Other notable mentions here is obviously their tofu. It's served in 2 different ways- fried crispy tofu and tofu with a little bit of fish meat in the middle and soy sauce. Both are really good but I always prefer the crispy tofu a little bit more!
As a shop that specializes in tofu, they also sell just blocks of fresh tofu and tofu drinks as well. We bought 2 blocks of fresh tofu for hotpotting at home one night and it definitely has a stronger bean flavour and smoother texture than the ones you buy at the supermarket.
Every time I come here with my mom, we always clean 2 bowls of Tofu Fa and 2 plates of fried, crispy tofu (even though dinner is in an hour). The place is always packed so make sure you know what you're going to order when you sit down!
