Pizza is always a good idea and being in university-town, most pizza places in Kitchener-Waterloo area are fast, cheap take out pizzas catered to the student population. However, Famoso in Uptown Waterloo serves freshly baked pizzas from a fire oven pizza and does not cheap out on the ingredients!
For appetizers we ordered Polpette Al Forno which is house-made spiced pork meatballs in tomato sauce with ricotta cheese and shaved grana padano. First bite into the meatball and you can taste how soft and light the meat is on the inside because it's house made and it's well spiced. It's also pan fried until it's a little crunchy on the outside and together with the sauce and cheese, it was a well executed appetizer! The garlic bread on the side also helps scoop up every little bit of sauce!
For pizza we ordered the Margherita. I enjoyed the thin crust however, I thought the sauce was lacking in flavour and there could've been a little more sauce on the pizza. They could've also added a little more basil as well.
One of my favourite desserts is an affogato and we tried it with a mint stracciatella gelato. It was a light gelato with shaven chocolate and a hint of mint which went really well with the espresso.
Overall, I like Famoso because it's a nice change from eating student priced and quality pizzas. They also have a variety of pizzas on their menu ranging from traditional red or white pizzas and new world pizzas.
